Genre: Action
Available On: Xbox 360, PC
Graphics:
The graphics in Left 4 Dead are truly stunning. The shading within the various environments fits the scene perfectly. These shadows change and react to when light is shone upon them as well, like from a flashlight. Every zombie/infected is extremely detailed, however, the same looking infected do show up quite often. The environment get's torn apart as the battle goes on, with broken walls, blood spatters, and corpses.
Gameplay:
Left 4 Dead has an extremely fun and easy to use combat system, which drops the player into the middle of a "contagious disease" outbreak. Basically, the player can collect very generic items which are all effective, however, strategy can be put behind these items. For example, if everyone chooses the hunting rifle, the group may have trouble taking on hordes of infected effectively. These items range from weapons, to thrown weapons (molotovs, etc.), to health items. This makes the game easy to play on the fly with very little, to no learning curve. Another simple aspect of the game is level design. The levels offer a few different ways to travel (various routes), however, all you need to do for all the levels is fight from Point A to Point B. This may sound easy, however, it is quite difficult at times. The difficulty levels offer a wide range of gameplay options (Easy is really easy, Expert is almost impossible).
Audio:
The audio in Left 4 Dead plays a key role in the gameplay. Various noises indicates what's in the area/coming towards the survivors (ie a puking noise = a Boomer in the area). Various infected make realistic and disturbing noises. Each special infected have unique noises they make, such as screams, which indicate which enemies are in the area. The background music keeps up with the action making the experience even more intense (ie fast music when a horde is coming).
Other:
Winner of the Game of the Year Award!!!! Yes!, Left 4 Dead one of the most incredible zombie games avalible. The campaign is based around 4 characters, Zoey, Bill, Francis, and Louis, they fight their way through hordes of zombies and special infected, such as Tanks, Boomers, Hunters, Smokers, and Witches. There are 4 main campaigns Deathtoll, No Mercy, Blood Harvest, and Dead Air, there will also be a 5th campaign released September 21, 2009. A newer mode was Survival mode when you start off in a certain area of a level and fight a endless horde of infected and special infected. The main campaigns are also played in versus where you play as the survivors and then as the infected, you are able to play as the Hunter, Smoker, Boomer, and the Tank in special areas. The witch is a unplayable character but can be a death weapon in the hands of a smoker (Drag a survivor into the witch, works every time.)
